A Carbon Brief analysis found that record UK wind and solar generation avoided around £5.9bn in gas imports between February and September 2026. Wind and solar supplied 41% of UK electricity in that period, while gas fell to 25%. The September saving alone was £1.3bn, equivalent to more than 100 LNG tanker deliveries that were not needed. Household gas bills are still set to rise 33% under the Ofgem price cap because wholesale gas prices are high, but electricity bills rose only 4%. That gap shows renewable generation is starting to weaken the link between gas prices and power prices. The analysis covers the period after the Hormuz crisis pushed UK gas prices to levels not seen since 2022.
