A UK waste-to-energy plant will add carbon capture after engineering firm Afry won a design contract for the project. The facility is expected to capture 370,000 tonnes of CO2 per year from non-recyclable waste, including both fossil and biogenic emissions. The captured CO2 will be sent through the HyNet North West network for permanent storage in depleted gas reservoirs under Liverpool Bay. Construction is set to take about three and a half years, with operations targeted for 2029. The project is part of the UK's Track-1 carbon capture cluster and has already secured a final investment decision from Encyclis. It also faces legal challenges from campaign groups over environmental assessments and questions about the economics of blue hydrogen. The HyNet cluster plans to start initial carbon capture and storage in 2027, with hydrogen pipelines and production networks finishing between 2028 and 2030.
