UK Space Agency Supports AI for Woodland Carbon Monitoring
environmentjournal.onlineAn Edinburgh-based AI firm, New Gradient, has developed a machine learning system to automate the monitoring of woodland carbon storage and tree health. Backed by the UK Space Agency, the tool uses satellite data to replace slow manual surveys with digital monitoring, reporting, and verification (dMRV). This technology aims to increase investor confidence in the Woodland Carbon Code by providing annual reporting on carbon delivery. By improving the accuracy of biomass and species classification, the system helps landowners attract the private investment needed to meet the UK's 2050 tree cover targets.
