UK's first net zero dialysis centre breaks ground in Liverpool with solar and heat pumps
pressreleasehub.pa.mediaFresenius Medical Care and NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group have broken ground on a 27-station dialysis centre at Aintree University Hospital. The project replaces two older clinics, adds capacity for around 160 patients, and includes a six-station home dialysis training unit. It is described as the UK's first net zero dialysis centre. The low-carbon design includes enhanced insulation, air-source heat pumps, LED lighting, smart ventilation controls and roughly 75kW of rooftop solar. The goal is to cut operational carbon and support NHS England's 2045 net zero target. Construction is expected to finish in summer 2027, with the first patients treated from July. The centre also adds EV charging and patient parking, and was planned with input from patients. The wider point is that essential, energy-intensive care like dialysis can be delivered in buildings designed to a lower-carbon standard.
