The UK's first commercial carbon capture and storage project, the Northern Endurance Partnership, has awarded a survey contract to Fugro for nearshore and offshore seabed surveys along the pipeline route. The project targets injecting up to 4 million tonnes of CO2 annually from 2028, backed by BP, Equinor, TotalEnergies, and National Gas. This marks a key step for the UK's East Coast Cluster and the broader CCUS industry, with over 4 billion pounds in supply chain contracts already awarded and around 5,000 construction jobs supported. Industry leaders are also pushing the government to accelerate a market for greenhouse gas removals, as the Climate Change Committee estimates the UK will need up to 35.8 million tonnes of CO2 removals per year by 2050. The Carbon Capture and Storage Association warns that delays in policy and infrastructure risk slowing deployment and weakening investor confidence at a critical stage.

4 Mt per year is a decent start but the CCC says the UK needs up to 35.8 Mt of removals annually by 2050. That is a huge gap. This project alone won't cut it.

True, but this is the first commercial one. The pipeline route surveys are the boring but critical part. If the seabed surveys find unexpected obstacles, timelines slip fast. 2028 target is ambitious.

The CCSA is already warning about policy delays and lack of long-term market incentives. The technical work is moving but the policy framework for GGRs is not keeping pace. That could stall the whole thing.

Good point. The article mentions the CCSA wants a route to market for an additional 18.2 Mt of removals by 2035. Without that, investor confidence drops. The survey contract is just one piece.
