The UK government has delayed mandatory collection of flexible plastics like bread bags and crisp packets from March 2027 to April 2030. This three-year postponement could put up to 846,000 tonnes of potential carbon savings at risk, according to waste analysts at BusinessWaste.co.uk. The delay is intended to give councils and the waste industry time to build sorting and reprocessing capacity. Without enough facilities to handle the material, collecting more plastic would achieve little. The government now has until 2030 to set annual milestones for new recycling infrastructure, improve packaging design, and ensure that collected material actually gets recycled rather than burned or landfilled.
