The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard has opened its verification process, allowing building owners to submit evidence for independent third-party review. Bureau Veritas is the verification administrator. Buildings must meet mandatory limits including fossil fuel removal, on-site renewable generation, and caps on upfront embodied carbon and in-use energy. Offsets cannot be used to meet these limits. The standard aims to provide a consistent definition of net zero carbon for the built environment, cutting through greenwash with measured performance data. Verification requires 12 months of in-use energy data and as-built embodied carbon data. Buildings that do not yet meet all requirements can pursue a Performance Evaluation for a detailed report card. The first verifications are expected soon, with wider verifier training opening in 2027. This gives investors and occupiers a credible way to confirm low-carbon building performance.
