The asphalt mix contained up to 60% recycled material from other highways, and the manufacturing process ran on biogas from anaerobic digestion. The scheme was funded by National Highways' Low Carbon Demonstrator Fund and delivered over six weeks. Techniques like echelon paving and laser profiling improved road durability and reduced future maintenance needs. The project saved 630 tonnes of CO2 equivalent total, with over 400 tonnes coming from recycled asphalt and biogas alone. This real-world demonstration shows how combining multiple low-carbon technologies can work at scale on high-traffic infrastructure.
