Spirit Energy has moved the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) Peak Cluster CCS project into the Assess Phase after UK regulator NSTA approval. The project plans to store CO2 in depleted North and South Morecambe gas fields in the East Irish Sea, targeting 1 billion tonnes of capacity. A 3D seismic survey by Shearwater Geoservices confirmed the fields' suitability. The project aims to capture and store up to 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year from four cement and lime plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Partners estimate a GBP 1.8 billion economic contribution by 2050 and over 13,000 jobs supported. The development repurposes existing offshore infrastructure for long-term industrial decarbonization.

The target is 3 million tonnes per year from four cement and lime plants. That is a decent chunk of UK industrial emissions if they actually get it built. The economic numbers look optimistic though.

3 Mtpa is not huge compared to UK total emissions but for hard to abate sectors like cement it matters. The real question is how long until first injection. Assess Phase is still early.

The NSTA Assess Phase is a regulatory gate. It means they have to submit a detailed storage development plan next. The real test is whether the business model works without endless subsidies.

They did a 500 sq km 3D seismic survey with Shearwater. That is a serious amount of subsurface work for a storage project. At least they are not skipping the geology.
