UK Morecambe CCS project reaches regulatory milestone for offshore CO2 storage from Spirit Energy
worldoil.comSpirit Energy has moved the Morecambe Net Zero (MNZ) Peak Cluster CCS project into the Assess Phase after UK regulator NSTA approval. The project plans to store CO2 in depleted North and South Morecambe gas fields in the East Irish Sea, targeting 1 billion tonnes of capacity. A 3D seismic survey by Shearwater Geoservices confirmed the fields' suitability. The project aims to capture and store up to 3 million tonnes of CO2 per year from four cement and lime plants in Derbyshire and Staffordshire. Partners estimate a GBP 1.8 billion economic contribution by 2050 and over 13,000 jobs supported. The development repurposes existing offshore infrastructure for long-term industrial decarbonization.
