UK installs world-first offshore CO2 storage platform in Liverpool Bay for HyNet cluster
interestingengineering.comThe UK has installed the world's first purpose-built offshore platform for CO2 storage in Liverpool Bay, between England and Wales. The Douglas CCS platform weighs 4,370 metric tons and will receive captured CO2 from industrial sites, then send it through existing subsea pipelines into depleted gas reservoirs. The project is operated by Eni CCUS Holding and is part of the HyNet industrial decarbonization cluster. The platform was installed on October 8 and took under 18 months from contract award to delivery. It is expected to store 4.5 million tons of CO2 per year initially, rising to 10 million tons after 2030, with total first-phase capacity of 109 million tons over its lifetime. Reusing old natural gas pipelines reduces the need for new construction. Liverpool Bay CCS is now 50 percent complete. Around 60 percent of its capital expenditure is going through UK supply chains, and construction has supported over 2,000 jobs. The project will create up to 300 long-term roles during an operating period that exceeds 25 years.
