UK green hydrogen SAF plant at Workington scaled to 42,000 tpy with dual eSAF and bioSAF design
hydrocarbonprocessing.comCarbon Neutral Fuels has redesigned its Project Starling sustainable aviation fuel plant in Workington, West Cumbria. The new FlexSAF setup runs both eSAF, made from biogenic CO2, water and renewable electricity, and advanced bioSAF from biomethane through one shared Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and upgrading line. That raises planned output from 25,000 to about 42,000 tonnes per year and cuts the cost per tonne by reusing naphtha and tail gas as syngas feed. The project is still early. Engineering is underway with io consulting, a planning application is expected in spring 2028, and first fuel is targeted for Q4 2031. If delivered, it would be one of the first commercial hybrid eSAF and bioSAF plants in the UK, built on a 40 acre brownfield site with more than 500 construction jobs and 150 operational roles. The timeline matters because UK and EU SAF mandates are rising faster than dedicated production capacity.
