UK Government Spends $1M on Climeworks Carbon Removal Credits for ECMWF Headquarters
carbonherald.comThe UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology has committed about $1 million to buy carbon removal credits from Climeworks. The credits are meant to offset roughly 5,165 tonnes of embodied carbon tied to the new European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts headquarters at the University of Reading's Whiteknights campus. The contract, announced in September 2026, runs for one year and five months and is the first award under a DSTI tender with a budget of up to $3.3 million. Climeworks was chosen from 27 applicants. The purchase supports the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard and covers construction-related emissions rather than the building's day to day energy use. At the stated figures, the deal works out to roughly $194 per tonne. That gives a useful data point on what government buyers are willing to pay for engineered removal in public procurement.
