The UK government has announced 47 million pounds in new funding for peatland restoration projects across England. Peatlands store more than half of the carbon found in England's land-based ecosystems, but 80 percent have been degraded by drainage for farming. The money will support rewetting infrastructure, wetland crop farming, and restoration training programs through 2030. The largest portion, 36 million pounds, goes to lowland peat water management infrastructure delivered by the Environment Agency. Another 10 million funds research into paludiculture, growing crops like bulrush on wetter peat soils for building materials and insulation. A further 1.15 million supports workforce training and apprenticeships in peatland restoration. Nature minister Mary Creagh compared England's peatlands to the Amazon rainforest in terms of carbon storage importance. The funding is part of a wider 85 million pound peat program running until 2030, aiming to lock carbon back into the ground while supporting wildlife, drought resilience, and flood protection.

The 80 percent degradation stat is brutal. Centuries of drainage for farming turned a carbon sink into a source. Rewetting is straightforward but scaling it across the Fens, Somerset Levels and Yorkshire will take years. Good to see they are funding workforce training too, that is often the bottleneck.

Paludiculture is the part I find most interesting. Growing bulrush for building insulation and jacket fill on wet peat instead of draining it. That creates a revenue stream for farmers while keeping carbon locked in. If the market develops, it could scale faster than grants alone.
