A new residential development in North London is the first in the UK to use calcined clay concrete in a permanent suspended slab. By replacing a portion of traditional Portland cement with thermally treated clay, the project reduced the embodied carbon of the concrete mix by 10%. This approach utilizes widely available clay and waste bricks to lower the environmental impact of concrete production, which currently accounts for roughly 8% of global emissions. The project serves as a practical test case for scaling low-carbon materials in the UK housing sector.
