UK farmers told to secure 75% of fertiliser before CBAM carbon tax on imports starts January 2027
conservativepost.co.ukUK farmers are being told to order 75% of their fertiliser before the end of the year to avoid the UK Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) when it starts on 1 January 2027. The advice comes from Frontier Agriculture, which says buying has picked up but the market is still behind normal seasonal levels. CBAM will add a carbon cost to imported fertiliser, and the UK no longer produces ammonia domestically after the Billingham plant closed in 2023. The exact cost per tonne is still unclear because the embedded emissions figures and free allowance adjustments have not been finalised. That uncertainty has led the NFU and NFU Scotland to call for a delay. Importers bringing in more than £50,000 of covered goods over 12 months must register with HMRC, though registration only opens by January 2028. Farmers and buyers are now weighing whether to move purchases forward before the border charge applies.
