A farmer in Somerset is testing a new underground drainage system using biochar to prevent the degradation of peat soils. Traditional drainage often causes peat to dry out and release stored carbon dioxide, but these biochar channels aim to manage water flow while keeping the soil intact. Supported by the Defra-backed ADOPT programme, the BioFlow project examines how biochar can act as a stable carbon store within agricultural land. The trial focuses on long-term soil health and water retention to ensure farmland remains viable and carbon-negative.
