EDF has extended the operating life of the Heysham 1 and Hartlepool nuclear power stations in the UK by two years, to March 2030. The decision adds an estimated 28 TWh of low-carbon generation, enough to power 8.4 million homes, and keeps more than 1,000 jobs at the two sites. The extension avoids gas generation equivalent to 25 LNG cargoes per year, supporting the UK's carbon targets and grid stability as renewables grow. The Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (AGR) fleet was originally scheduled to shut down by 2023, but repeated life extensions have kept four stations online. EDF based the decision on technical reviews of boilers and graphite cores, plus supply chain and workforce planning. The article notes that when nuclear goes offline, gas typically fills the gap, so extending these plants directly reduces emissions and import reliance.
