The UK Climate Change Committee has warned that the country's shift to clean electricity is too slow. Overall emissions fell only 1.8% in the latest period, with industrial declines driven mainly by blast furnace closures at Port Talbot. The CCC says the government needs a more ambitious plan to electrify key sectors and reduce electricity costs to stay on track for 2030 targets. The report highlights barriers like slow grid connections and high electricity costs that block business electrification. It also notes progress on carbon capture and storage with 9.4 billion pounds allocated, but warns uncertainty remains beyond initial projects. Sustainable aviation fuel supply also faces significant scaling challenges. Xoserve's decarbonisation strategy manager argues that low-carbon gases like hydrogen and biomethane alongside CCS can help decarbonize hard-to-electrify sectors. The CCC stresses that many emissions reductions still lack credible plans, and political uncertainty could slow investment in the transition.
