The Mineral Products Association (MPA) is urging the UK government to provide better support for the domestic cement sector. Producers are currently facing higher energy and carbon costs compared to international competitors, which increases the risk of carbon leakage and a reliance on higher-carbon imports. To protect competitiveness, the MPA is calling for a robust Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and faster progress on carbon capture policy. They argue that without these measures and better industrial energy pricing, the UK cement industry remains vulnerable while other sectors receive compensation.
