UK backs carbon capture expansion to renew heavy industry
tradersunion.comUK ministers are pushing carbon capture, utilisation and storage as a core part of the country's industrial strategy. A government speech to the Carbon Capture and Storage Association's 2026 conference ties CCUS to keeping cement, chemicals, refining and power competitive while cutting emissions. Existing projects already support around 5,500 jobs, with the East Coast Cluster accounting for over 3,000 construction roles and more than £2 billion in supply-chain contracts across 260 UK suppliers. The next phase includes new competitions on Teesside, plus support for the Viking cluster in the Humber and Acorn in Scotland. The minister also warned that funding decisions will face tight fiscal constraints, so the pace and sequencing of projects may shift. That makes this a story about both industrial policy and how far public money will stretch.
