UK aviation needs urgent government support to hit net zero by 2050, warns Sustainable Aviation coalition
independent.co.ukThe UK aviation sector is calling for urgent government support to meet its net zero carbon target by 2050. Sustainable Aviation, a coalition of airlines, airports, and plane makers, published its 2026 Decarbonisation Roadmap warning that without policy action, costs for passengers could rise and the UK could lose global competitiveness. Under the roadmap, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) would make up 65% of aviation fuel by 2050, down from an earlier estimate of 75%. The group says greenhouse gas removals will need to account for 29% of reductions, removing roughly 19.5 million tonnes of CO2 annually. Emissions per passenger have already fallen 22% since 2005, while passenger numbers rose 28%. The coalition wants the government to fund aerospace innovation, speed up airspace upgrades, make SAF affordable, and create a cost-effective carbon removals system. Without these measures, the industry warns transition costs will be higher than in competitor markets.
