UK approves Jackdaw natural gas project off Scotland despite emissions concerns
newindianexpress.comThe UK government approved the Jackdaw natural gas project in the North Sea east of Aberdeen, over objections from environmental groups. Gas is expected to reach the national grid later this year. The government says the field will supply about 5% of UK gas production over its 11-year life and reduce reliance on imported fuel. Approval came after the Court of Session in Edinburgh ruled in 2024 that the original approval was unlawful because it did not assess emissions from burning the gas. The government reviewed the project again and approved it. Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said the decision balances winter energy security with the transition to renewables and nuclear. The separate Rosebank oil project west of Shetland is still under review. Both projects are being developed by Adura, a Shell joint venture. The government says it still plans to end new oil and gas licenses and reach net zero by 2050.
