Uganda Launches $31M Forest Restoration Project, First GCF Results-Based Payment in Africa
chimpreports.comUganda has launched a $31 million results-based payment project funded by the Green Climate Fund to restore degraded forests and support climate-resilient livelihoods. The payment follows independent verification that the country cut deforestation and forest degradation emissions by about 8 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent in 2016-2017, making it the first GCF results-based payment approved for Uganda, for Africa, and for a Least Developed Country. The project will strengthen Uganda's forest monitoring, reporting and verification systems, improve safeguards and benefit-sharing, and fund agroforestry, sustainable charcoal and fuelwood production, timber plantations, and natural forest restoration. It targets roughly 21,000 rural households, about 105,000 people, across 17 districts. Uganda's broader goal is to restore forest cover to 24% of national land area by 2040.
