Researchers at UCLA have developed a method to integrate graphene oxide into concrete to increase strength and durability. By using ultrasonic treatment and polymer surfactants, the team improved the dispersion of the nanomaterial, allowing for high performance with lower cement dosages. Since cement production accounts for approximately 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, reducing the amount of binder needed for infrastructure is a critical step for industrial decarbonization. This approach could lead to longer-lasting buildings and bridges that require fewer repairs and less material over time.
