Berlin based Ucaneo has started operating Germany's largest direct air capture plant in Berlin Marzahn. The facility removes 150 metric tons of CO2 per year using an electrochemical process that needs no heat, unlike older thermal DAC systems. The company says the plant outputs CO2 at over 99.9 percent purity and can run flexibly with renewable power and grid pricing. A portion of the captured CO2 will go into permanent geological storage, making this the first verified DACS project in Germany. Ucaneo is now the fifth company globally to permanently sequester atmospheric carbon via DAC. A second plant with roughly ten times the capacity is in engineering and expected to start construction in 2027. The company is targeting industrial buyers who need carbon for sustainable aviation fuels, chemicals, and plastics as European net zero mandates tighten.
