UBQ Materials launches carbon-negative plastic alternative from household waste for construction and manufacturing
forconstructionpros.comUBQ Materials has introduced UBQ Masterbatch, a thermoplastic made entirely from unsorted household waste including organics and hard-to-recycle items. The material can replace oil-based resins in injection molding and other standard manufacturing processes without requiring new equipment. The company says production diverts up to 95% of household waste from landfills or incineration and achieves a negative carbon footprint by using waste that would otherwise emit methane. The product targets construction materials and consumer goods, with existing partnerships including Crescent Garden, Mercedes-Benz, PepsiCo, and McDonald's. A 5 million euro grant from the European Commission's Just Transition Fund is supporting further development. With U.S. landfills projected to reach capacity by 2036, the material offers a practical path for manufacturers to reduce virgin plastic use and lower their carbon impact.
