UBC MacIsaac Health Building earns first zero-carbon certification on Vancouver campus
constructioncanada.netUBC's MacIsaac Health Building has become the first project on the Vancouver campus to earn CAGBC Zero Carbon Building Design Standard v2 certification. Designed by Perkins&Will with Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the 25,000 square metre facility houses nursing, kinesiology, student health, research and teaching space, and also achieved LEED Gold. The design targets operational and embodied carbon. A high-performance envelope, natural ventilation and heat recovery cut energy demand, while a whole-building life cycle assessment guided material choices. Mass timber is used for structure and exposed finishes, and low-carbon concrete mixes were specified. Modular components were used to reduce waste and improve construction efficiency. The project shows how large institutional buildings can pursue zero carbon certification while keeping program needs and Indigenous design collaboration in the picture. Musqueam representatives contributed to the building and landscape design.
