UBC MacIsaac Health Building Earns BOMA Canada Accessibility Award, Targets Zero Carbon Certification
reminetwork.comThe University of British Columbia's MacIsaac Health Building has received the 2026 BOMA Canada Rick Hansen Accessibility Award for inclusive design. The six-storey, 25,100-square-metre health sciences facility opened in December 2025 and brings together nursing, kinesiology, student health, and research programs under one roof. Beyond accessibility features like universal washrooms, assistive listening systems, and visual fire alarms, the building is designed to achieve LEED Gold and target Zero Carbon Building certification. It also incorporates Indigenous perspectives developed with Musqueam, including native plantings and public art. The award recognizes the highest Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification rating among BOMA Canada member buildings in the past year. For anyone tracking low-carbon building design, this project is a useful case study in combining accessibility goals with serious sustainability targets.
