UAE human rights body urges safeguards for climate tech: impact assessments, community input, worker protections
dubaieye1038.comThe UAE's National Human Rights Institution has called on the UN to add human rights and environmental safeguards to climate technology development. In a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change, it recommended impact assessments across the full lifecycle of a technology, earlier involvement of affected communities, and stronger worker protections. The body also warned that low-carbon technologies should not automatically be considered safe or sustainable. It wants closer examination of how projects affect people, privacy, land, water, and biodiversity, and said access to new climate tech should be fairer. For anyone tracking carbon markets or clean energy policy, the important part is that human rights criteria could become part of how projects are assessed and financed. The submission also highlights UAE activity in renewables, carbon capture, hydrogen, and AI in energy, water, and agriculture.
