A new report from the American Biochar Institute (ABI) says the U.S. biochar industry reached roughly $157 million in economic value in 2025. That is nearly triple the $53.6 million estimated for 2023. The growth comes from rapid commercialization and capacity expansion, with biochar now used in agriculture, water filtration, environmental remediation, and carbon sequestration. Agriculture remains the largest market, but other sectors are growing fast. The report is based on self-reported industry data and is meant to benchmark the domestic sector as it scales. ABI says state and city projects in places like Minneapolis and Cincinnati are driving adoption. The group also identified obstacles to further growth, including limited awareness and lack of standardized markets. ABI plans to push for better standards and more demand to keep the sector moving.
