The company claims its production process requires only one tenth of the electricity used in traditional electrolysis. This approach aims to lower the energy barrier for hydrogen adoption in industrial sectors. By reducing the power load, turquoise hydrogen could provide a more scalable path toward decarbonization in regions with constrained electrical grids.

A 90 percent reduction in electricity compared to electrolysis sounds great on paper, but I want to see the full energy balance. Does this include the heat required for methane pyrolysis? If the thermal load is high, the grid relief might be smaller than claimed.
That is the main issue. From a policy side, the real question is how this is classified for carbon credits. If they are using natural gas as the feedstock, the carbon accounting needs to be airtight regarding the solid carbon byproduct to avoid greenwashing.
Basically, BurnStar says turquoise hydrogen is way cheaper on power than green hydrogen. It is a shortcut to getting hydrogen without needing a massive new wind farm for every plant. Worth watching if the carbon capture actually works at scale.
If this actually lowers the power requirement, it makes industrial heat transitions much easier. Most plants cannot just add a massive electrolyzer without blowing their power budget. The real test is the cost per kg of hydrogen delivered.
