Turning brewery waste into nanocellulose: NanoBrew's plan to cut emissions and supply a billion-dollar market

New Zealand sends 13,700 tonnes of brewery waste to landfill each year, generating emissions equivalent to 3,300 petrol cars. The process uses engineered enzymes to extract nanocellulose at scale, turning a disposal cost into a revenue stream for breweries. If the enzymatic process works commercially, this approach could reduce biogenic methane from organic waste without relying on subsidies or government mandates. The nanocellulose market is valued in the billions, and the feedstock is already concentrated at breweries. NanoBrew plans to present results at the iGEM competition in late 2026. The key question is whether the lab-scale process can be scaled to industrial volumes at competitive cost.
