Tucson is implementing the FoodCycle program to divert organic waste from landfills, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2030. By processing food and plant waste into compost, the city reduces the production of methane, a potent greenhouse gas generated when organic matter decomposes anaerobically in landfills. Since January 2024, the initiative has diverted over 5,000 tons of organic material. The city uses wind row composting at the Los Reales Sustainability Campus to create nutrient-rich soil for community gardens and public schools, integrating waste management with urban sustainability.
