Tualatin, Oregon In-Pipe Hydropower: 56 kW Conduit System Powers City Services Building
energytech.comTualatin, Oregon has switched on a 56 kW in-pipe hydropower system that uses pressure from the city's drinking water supply to power the City Services building. The project, developed with Oregon-based InPipe Energy, is expected to generate about 270,000 kWh per year and save the city roughly $26,000 annually. It is the first project of its kind for the municipality and part of a planned microgrid with solar and battery storage. The system taps water flowing from Bull Run Reservoir into Tualatin's distribution network, producing electricity around the clock without interrupting water delivery. Funding came in part from Portland General Electric's Green Future Renewable Development Fund and Energy Trust of Oregon. A 2022 Oak Ridge National Laboratory report estimated that similar conduit hydropower could add about 1.4 GW of capacity across existing pipelines and canals in the U.S.
