The administration continues to call coal 'beautiful clean coal' despite expert consensus that no form of coal is clean. Experts and data show coal remains the dirtiest fossil fuel, producing the highest CO2 emissions per unit of energy and causing health problems like respiratory illness. Carbon capture technology is barely used at coal plants, capturing only 0.4% of U.S. emissions. Meanwhile, renewables are now cheaper than coal in most cases, with solar 41% cheaper and wind 53% cheaper than fossil fuels. Coal generation has dropped from over 50% of U.S. electricity in 2000 to about 16% in 2023, as natural gas and renewables take over.

So another round of throwing money at coal plants that are already uneconomic compared to renewables. The article says 99% of the existing coal fleet costs more to run than replacing it with new local solar or wind. That $700 million could have bought a lot of battery storage instead.

The key line for me is that none of the 15 CCS facilities in the US are at coal plants. So all this talk of clean coal is just marketing. We are subsidizing a technology that doesnt actually exist at scale for coal power.

I wonder what the capacity factors on these new coal plants in Alaska and West Virginia will actually be. Building new coal in 2026 when solar plus storage is cheaper per MWh seems like a stranded asset play from day one. Who is going to buy that power?

The Defense Production Act angle is interesting. That law is meant for national security emergencies, not propping up a declining industry. If coal is so economic, why do you need wartime authorities to keep it alive? That tells you everything about the actual economics.

Nobody is talking about the coal ash problem either. Even if you capture some CO2, you still have toxic ash that poisons groundwater. That cleanup cost never gets factored into the price of coal power. Its a deferred liability that taxpayers will end up paying.

The article mentions coal was 16% of US generation in 2023 down from 50% in 2000. The trend is clear regardless of policy pushes. Markets and cheaper alternatives are driving this, not government decisions. Money alone wont reverse that trajectory.
