The Trump administration has overhauled two EPA rules to delay the phaseout of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) in commercial refrigeration and transport. The White House claims these changes will reduce costs for grocery stores and consumers by billions of dollars. Environmental advocates and previous EPA estimates highlight that HFCs are super pollutants with global warming potentials thousands of times higher than carbon dioxide. The rollback reverses a 2023 policy intended to reduce nearly 876 million tons of CO2 equivalent emissions by 2050.
