Tropical forests can flip from carbon sinks to carbon sources during El Niño events
theconversation.comNew research tracking over half a million trees across South America shows that tropical forests can stop absorbing carbon and start releasing it during El Niño events. The 2015-2016 El Niño caused some forests to effectively become carbon sources, with larger trees dying at double the normal rate. Drier forests at the edges of the Amazon were hit hardest, losing 0.5% of aboveground carbon for every 0.5 degree Celsius temperature increase. With El Niño events becoming more frequent and intense, and ocean and air temperatures already at record highs, the risk is that these forests may not recover between stress events. The study measured trees across six countries over 30 years and found that hydraulic failure, not slow carbon starvation, was the main cause of tree death. This matters for carbon accounting and climate models that assume tropical forests will remain reliable carbon sinks.
