They also pull moisture from surrounding air to sustain themselves, leaving a dry trail that cuts rain chances by 15 to 18 percent for about two weeks after the storm passes. The research tracks how this post cyclone dry spell briefly alters the local water cycle, which could matter for agriculture and water management in storm prone regions. Separate research in the same release warns that climate models may be overestimating how much carbon Europe's forests can store. Dry spells slow tree growth more than models account for, and under 4.5 degrees of warming, carbon storage could drop by up to 30 percent by 2069 compared to 2005-2014 levels. Another study projects that fire smoke in southwestern China could erase decades of air quality gains by 2060, causing over 40,000 additional premature deaths. These findings highlight how climate feedbacks on water, forests, and fire are interconnected and often underestimated.
