TriGen Proposes CO2-EOR for Mexico Mature Oil Fields, Adding Low-Carbon Barrels and CO2 Storage
mexicobusiness.newsTriGen Energy is proposing a model for Mexico's mature oil fields that combines pressurized oxy-fuel power generation with CO2-enhanced oil recovery. At the Mexico Oil and Gas Summit 2026, CEO Pieter Kapteijn said the approach could add 650 million to 820 million barrels of incremental crude across 15 PEMEX fields while storing 200 million to 250 million tonnes of CO2. Each site would also produce power, fresh water, and extend field life by 12 to 18 years. The proposal lands as PEMEX proven reserves have fallen roughly 40% since 2014. Mature fields already have wells, infrastructure, and reservoir data, which lowers the subsurface risk that usually slows new projects. TriGen estimates $2.5 billion to $3.5 billion in capital costs and says the main challenge is commercial structure, not technology. The company wants a consortium-based lighthouse project and regulatory flexibility to prove the model in Mexico.
