Trase Data Links Indonesian Palm Oil Peat Emissions to Buyers as B50 Biodiesel Mandate Grows
techtimes.comNew Trase Earth analysis traces carbon emissions from drained Indonesian peatlands to the companies buying the palm oil. Peat subsidence and fires accounted for roughly 85 percent of the sector's greenhouse gas footprint in 2024, about 148 million tonnes CO2e, far more than forest clearance. The data links those emissions to specific exporters using customs, shipping, and satellite records. Indonesia's B50 biodiesel mandate is pushing more palm oil into domestic use. In 2024, 53 percent of crude palm oil was consumed at home, and domestic demand was tied to 67 percent of deforestation. Zero-deforestation pledges cover most exports, but they miss the domestic market where the fastest-growing demand sits. That leaves a major carbon blind spot that supply chain policies have not addressed.
