Transdev Blazefield is set to surpass five million kilometres of electric bus travel across its Harrogate and Keighley fleets, just ahead of World Environment Day. The milestone includes 39 new battery-powered buses added in 2024 and 15 more in Keighley in 2025, funded by investments of £21 million and £6.6 million respectively. The company says the carbon savings from the Keighley fleet alone equate to about 1,430 tonnes of CO2 per year, roughly the same as powering 270 homes for a year. The buses are charged using renewable electricity sourced from Scottish wind farms, and Transdev has also introduced dual recycling bins, rainwater recycling for washing, and carbon-offset printed timetables. By late June 2026, the operator expects to have logged five million zero-emission kilometres, equivalent to circling the planet 124 times. The company runs over 500 buses from nine depots across northern England, supporting more than 32 million passenger journeys annually.

5 million km on electric buses is decent for a UK regional operator. The 1,430 tonnes CO2 saved per year from Keighley is a real number, not just PR fluff. Would like to see the per-bus cost per km though, that tells you if the economics hold.

Agreed. The £21m for 39 buses works out to about £538k each, which is steep. But if they run high mileage routes and the electricity is cheap from wind, payback might be under 10 years. Need to see utilization rates.

Charging from Scottish wind farms is good, but what about grid capacity at the depots? If they're adding 54 electric buses across two sites, the local distribution network needs upgrades. That's often the hidden bottleneck.

The carbon offset claim for timetables is minor, but the core story is solid. Zero emission buses are one of the few transport decarbonization options that actually work at scale today. More operators need to follow this path.
