Taylor Heffner, a petroleum engineer with over a decade of experience in Colorado, has joined Tradewater as part of the transaction to lead plugging and abandonment activities. This move highlights the growing role of private capital in addressing methane leaks from orphaned wells, a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions. The expansion into Colorado and Wyoming adds scale to a project type that generates carbon credits from verified methane reductions.

Good point on verification. Orphaned well methane credits need solid measurement or you get junk offsets. EPA says 141k documented wells but unknowns could double that. Scale matters if the math checks out.

Interesting that an oil and gas publication covers this. Tradewater is basically a carbon project developer using plugging as the asset class. Adding a petroleum engineer from Colorado gives them field credibility for the Rockies work.

The policy angle is that orphaned well plugging gets funding from both the IIJA and voluntary carbon markets. Tradewater is stacking those. But the 30M tonne target by 2030 is ambitious given they started in 2023. Execution risk is real.

Plugging wells is straightforward compared to some carbon projects. You seal the hole, measure the methane reduction, sell the credit. The bottleneck is finding the wells and getting access. Carbon Shield brings that local network.
