TRÆ Tower Aarhus: Reducing Construction Emissions with Mass Timber and Upcycled Wind Turbines
freeyork.orgThe TRÆ tower in Aarhus, Denmark, demonstrates a significant reduction in embodied carbon by replacing traditional concrete with mass timber and cross-laminated timber (CLT). The project achieved a 26 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to standard concrete towers through a combination of biogenic materials and circular construction methods. One of the project's most distinct features is the use of retired wind turbine blades as solar shading. This upcycling approach resulted in a carbon footprint 27 times lower than that of conventional aluminum screens, showcasing a practical application of circular economy principles in urban architecture.
