Toyota has reached carbon neutrality at its Tahara plant in Japan. The facility integrated five 145 meter wind turbines and 1,200 solar panels to power operations, alongside the use of clean burning hydrogen and energy efficiency upgrades. Beyond energy generation, Toyota is expanding circular manufacturing. This includes a new system at its UK Burnaston plant to recover steel, high purity plastics, and reusable parts from end of life vehicles to lower the total carbon footprint of production.

Tahara is a massive site. Using on site wind and solar is a start, but I want to see the actual percentage of load covered by these assets versus credits or grid offsets.

Exactly. 530kW from solar is tiny for a plant that size. The wind turbines do the heavy lifting, but I wonder about the curtailment rates and how they handle the intermittency without massive storage.

The mention of carbon neutrality often hides the difference between absolute zero and net zero. If they are using offsets for the remaining gap, it is a different conversation than true decarbonization.

The circular factory in the UK is the more interesting part. Recovering 8,200 tonnes of steel is a real win for industrial efficiency. That is where the actual carbon savings happen in the long run.
