Toyota Deeside plant starts carbon neutral engine production with biomethane and recycled aluminium
motortradenews.comToyota has started carbon neutral engine production at its Deeside plant in North Wales, making it the first Toyota manufacturing site outside Japan to reach that status. The plant builds the 1.8 litre engine used in hybrid and petrol versions of the Corolla and C-HR. Toyota says the site now runs on renewable electricity, sends no waste to landfill, and uses recycled aluminium from end-of-life alloy wheels for engine blocks. The main driver is an anaerobic digester that turns local community waste into biomethane gas and electricity. It processes up to 180,000 tonnes of waste a year and saves nearly 3,000 tonnes of CO2 annually compared with natural gas. Toyota plans to make all its European manufacturing sites carbon neutral by 2030. The Deeside announcement is a concrete example of how factory heat and power can shift away from fossil gas without relying on offsets.
