TotalEnergies has signed methane reduction agreements with three national oil companies: Petronas in Malaysia, Sonangol in Angola and Oil India. The work is part of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter, launched at COP28, which targets near zero upstream methane emissions by 2030. The partnerships focus on detecting and quantifying methane. TotalEnergies' drone-mounted AUSEA sensor will run a second campaign at Oil India sites in Assam after covering 20 sites in the first round. In Malaysia, Petronas will lead SEA METEC, a new center to test methane measurement technologies across Southeast Asia. In Angola, the companies will study flaring cuts, energy efficiency and electrification, with possible support from the World Bank's Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Fund. The agreements are still mostly cooperation and testing. The next step is whether the monitoring data turns into repair programs and flaring reductions that show up in reported emissions.
