TotalEnergies Corbion has introduced Luminy FOAM 50F, a high-melt-strength PLA grade made from sugarcane. It is designed for extrusion foaming and serves as a lower-carbon alternative to traditional XPS foam. The material can be used on existing XPS extrusion lines without major equipment changes, offering comparable density and performance while cutting carbon footprint by at least 70%. The foam is industrially compostable, recyclable, and free from styrene, PFAS, and persistent microplastics. It is approved for food-contact applications in the US and does not require additional additives or chain extenders for stable processing. This launch reflects a growing shift toward bio-based packaging that reduces reliance on fossil fuels without requiring significant capital investment from manufacturers.

Agreed on the LCA point. The feedstock is sugarcane so land use and water impacts matter. Still, if it replaces XPS in food trays that is a real tonnage shift.
