TotalEnergies Corbion has introduced Luminy FOAM 50F, a high melt strength PLA grade designed as a drop in replacement for extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) in food packaging and food service applications. The material is biobased from sugarcane, industrially compostable, and free from styrene, PFAS, and persistent microplastics. It can run on existing XPS extrusion lines with similar throughput, so converters do not need new equipment. The company claims at least a 70% reduction in carbon footprint compared to standard XPS foam parts. With polystyrene bans accelerating in multiple markets, this product is positioned as a scalable alternative rather than a niche material. It is FDA and Korean food contact approved and available globally for non-food applications. The launch targets trays for fresh products, meat, and fish as well as broader food service packaging. The material is also recyclable and does not require extra additives or chain extenders for stable foam processing.
