Tory net zero cost claim inflated by £500bn after spreadsheet error
streamlinefeed.co.keKemi Badenoch's Conservative policy document, The Right Way, overstates the cost of UK net zero by nearly £500 billion. Carbon Brief found that the Climate Change Committee's Sixth Carbon Budget figure was doubled from £478 billion to £957 billion, likely because a totals row was included in the spreadsheet sum. The CCC says it does not recognize the number and has offered to brief the party directly. The error matters because it underpins the argument for scrapping the 2050 target. The CCC's more recent estimate puts the net cost around £110 billion, roughly 0.2% of GDP, after accounting for cheaper renewables and battery storage. Policy built on an outdated and inflated figure weakens the whole debate.
