Topsoe to supply blue ammonia technology for Nebraska fertilizer plant cutting transport costs and emissions
azocleantech.comTopsoe has signed a technology contract with J Westling & Co to supply its SynCOR Ammonia technology for a blue ammonia fertilizer plant in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The facility will produce about 500 short tons per day of low-carbon ammonia using natural gas as feedstock. It is the first time Topsoe's autothermal reforming technology has been used specifically for low-carbon fertilizer production. The project aims to cut the high cost of transporting ammonia from the Gulf Coast, which currently runs between $100 and $120 per ton, and give local farmers a more reliable domestic supply. Blue ammonia is made from natural gas with carbon capture, so it has a lower emissions profile than conventional ammonia. BNEF estimates clean ammonia could make up 13 percent of global supply by 2030, with the U.S. producing about a third of that. This project in Nebraska is a concrete example of that shift. It also shows how low-carbon industrial projects can strengthen supply chains and reduce transport emissions at the same time. The key question is how much of the carbon is actually captured and stored, and whether the economics hold up at this scale.
